Bike helmets for children generally come in a few sizes. Find the one that fits closest and then use the hat hardware to get a snug fit, Mudge said. Helmets are measured by head diameters, not hat sizes, Sagat noted. Many are made of closed New Balance 574 Running
To encourage them to break free of training wheels, parents can talk about how much more fun bicycling is without the extra help slowing them down. It's good to run beside them as they take their first wheel less rides, Robinson said. They won't need their parents coaxing them along for long, he said.
Just make sure that the bicycle fits the child, he said. Good first pedal bikes are often 12 inch bikes, meaning there's a foot between where the pedals meet and the top of the tube that holds the seat. Bikes get bigger from there, such as a 15 inch bike.
After a few weeks, kids don't need them anymore, said John Mudge, owner of Rolls Rite Bicycles in Waynesville. But it all depends on the child.
kids are just outgoing and brave and they want to (ride bikes), and others, it just scares them to death," Mudge said. "I'm thinking 4 or 5 is a pretty good age to see if a kid is interested or not. And then, it depends on the parents and how protective or over protective they are. Some are just too afraid to let their kids do anything like that. A lot of kids are more enthusiastic than their parents are."
It's never too early to start your child on a bicycle.
Kids get the hang of bicycles pretty quickly.
David Sagat, a bike mechanic at Motion Makers Bicycle Shop in Asheville and Sylva, said children can start "as soon as possible" on small bikes that have no pedals or drive train. A child sits on the bike and scoots along, learning balance without the aid of training wheels. Strider bikes are pretty slow, Sagat said, so there's little danger of them falling over.
Mudge said. Shops can fit a bicycle to a rider, which allows them to ride more efficiently and comfortably.
"The critical element is, can the person straddle the bike and not have the top tube all the way into his crotch," Mudge said. Nor should the seat be too low. "A bike that is too small quickly becomes very uncomfortable and unstable."
Training wheels are still a common route to independent riding. They can be placed low enough to the ground so that the bicycle feels like a tricycle. They can be raised incrementally as a child gets used to riding until they're barely touching the sidewalk.

He advises parents to make sure that the seat is extended high enough so that their child's legs are nearly (but not quite) completely extended on the down stroke. Anything less puts stress on the knees.
Some children develop a sense of balance faster than others and are ready for the training wheels to come off sooner than other kids, Sagat said. There is no "right" or "wrong" about it it's whenever the child feels ready.

"It's like pretending to ride a New Balance 1080v4 bike," Michael Robinson, owner of The Bicycle Company in Hendersonville, said of the starter bikes that attract children as young as 2. "If a child has a good sense of balance, they can go from a Strider bike to a bike without training wheels."

Though he owns a bike shop, Mudge understands why a parent would buy a child's first bike at a big box store bikes there can cost less than $100. They're sturdily built and can take some knocks, making them good starter bikes. But take into account that big box bikes are often assembled by someone with no bike mechanic experience who is also juggling several other responsibilities, Sagat said. Children's bikes from bike shops, however, are usually better made, as well made as adult bicycles, Mudge noted.
"It generally takes them a week or two at most to find their sense of balance and get courageous about it," Mudge said. Sooner or later, most every child is going to take a spill on a bicycle. "Most kids shrug it off," he said. "It's part of the learning curve."
"You get some kids 5 years old tearing about on two wheel bikes and you see kids older than are just getting comfortable with training wheels," he said. "That's why we try to get them to avoid training wheels to start with."
